About Us

Nancy the Wonderful Church MemberZion Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in Garrett on December 10th, 1887. From the start we have been a part of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. Many German immigrants were living in the Garrett area, working with the railroad, and with farming. Missionary pastors went to reach out to them with the Gospel and soon a congregation was born.

Zion Lutheran's beginning as a congregation has continued to shape it to this day. We began with an effort to reach out in love to the German immigrants in our area, and we still continue to reach out in love to the people in our community. When that initial outreach took place, the goal was to bring people into a congregation that taught the truth of God's Word in a loving way. Zion was formed as a congregation that taught the Bible thoroughly, that held to the Lutheran Confessions because they are a true exposition of the Bible, and sought to teach the faith to young and old using Luther's Small Catechism. We still have that same solid foundation on Christ today. We still teach the Bible, hold to the Lutheran Confessions and educate using the Small Catechism.

From our first days until today, our goal has been to bring Christ to the people and the people to Christ. We are a congregation that holds to the truth of the Bible, yet speaks it in love to each other and the world.
